It's picture day, you want your child to look his or her best. After all, these are professional portraits that will last a lifetime and that you’ll want to display in your home and share with family. Here are some tips to help you prepare your child to take the best preschool or daycare photos possible.

#1 Let your child choose

The night before photo day select 3 to 5 outfits for your child to choose from. This way, we will be for sure they are not crying over an outfit choice they don't like. Find comfortable clothing that he or she loves and that you know looks good on them.

#2 Color palettes

Tone down bright colors. Bright colors attract attention away from the face and may be reflective. If possible, avoid wearing bright red, bright pink, bright green etc. When choosing lighter colors, stick to pastels, but avoid pink tones. Pale yellow and pale blue work well, especially with jeans or khaki pants.

#3 Plain not prints

It’s better to avoid clothing with slogans, over-sized logos, cartoon characters, and loud patterns that can distract from your child’s smiling face. Clothing should complement and not compete.

#4 Accessories

Accessories shouldn't overwhelm your child, but instead enhance their cuteness! Children look especially adorable in fun hats, vests and jackets, and don't forget about their shoes - they will show in full length poses.

#5 Layers and textures

Dress your child in lace, ruffles, ribbons, etc. Layers add dimension and great texture to the portrait.

#6 Sibling outfits

Coordinate their outfits, but don't match (unless they are twins and you absolutely would like them to look the same of course). Choose a color palette and coordinate both children's outfits.

#7 Prepare a spare

If you know your child is one who may potentially mess up their outfit, bring an extra outfit with them on picture day.

#8 No time to shop?

Denim pants or skirts with plain, solid colored t-shirts are a classic look! But if you have time, consider checking out Zara Kids. I love their collection of clothes for kids.
